Hi, we are Tyler and Madison and on August 31, we are partially moving out of our Dalhousie split-level 10 minutes walk from the Dalhousie LRT. You would share the house with Jose, a physicist from Colombia doing his PhD at the UofC, and his 5-year old Springer Spaniel, Blues. We (Madison, Tyler, toddler Viola, and 8-year old Lab mix named John) will are partially relocating to Washington state but will occasionally return as Madison is still working on her PhD at the UofC.

The main floor of the house has three bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms along with an open-format kitchen, living room, and sunroom with attached deck. Downstairs, there is one bedroom which is currently a guest room and will be occupied by us when we’re in town, one living room, one bathroom, and a two-car garage. Outside, there’s second ground-level deck, greenhouse, shed, lots of garden space, many fruit-producing bushes and trees, hops, and native perennials.

So, what is actually for rent? The main 14’x14’ bedroom with en suite bathroom is available starting Sept. 1 for $800/mo. There is an additional small 9’x11’ bedroom that could be available to rent in addition to the larger master bedroom for an additional $300 but we are not prioritizing renting it out on its own. Internet and baseline, typical utilities are included in the price of rent. Specific higher usages (e.g. water for gardening, EV charging, high heating in winter) can be negotiated. You would also have full access to the main floor of the house, yard, greenhouse, garden beds, and guest room when we are not in Calgary.

This is a great situation for a small family who doesn’t mind sharing space like us, a couple with pet(s), or possibly a couple of roommates looking for more space. If you want to rent somewhere that you can grow your own food, this house is also for you!

Ideally, you will want to stay in the house for at least 1 year but we are flexible on timeline for the right fit. Please note, we are currently planning to sell the house when Jose and Madison are done with their PhDs and the tenancy agreement would likely end in late 2024 or early 2025.

More things to mention: -we currently keep the thermostat at 16 overnight and 18 during the day in winter -LGBTQ+ friendly -fenced backyard -large 16’x28’ greenhouse, several raised beds, and a 12’x12’ space dedicated to growing vegetables -productive carpet of native strawberry plants, 10+ hop plants, currant, gooseberry, and other fruit nearing production -the downstairs bathroom is directly next to the door to the back yard, which makes dog cleaning easy in the muddy months -there is currently an EV charger installed in the garage that we could leave if desired -two fridges make sharing kitchen space easy

Jose: PhD student at UofCa, from Colombia. Tyler: Physicist from Washington. Madison: PhD student at UofCa, from Oregon Viola: Baby from Canada Blues and John: 6 and 8-year-old dogs.

Notice that mainly you will share the house with Jose and Blues. But Madison will spend a week every other month on average in the house, and Tyler Viola and John will visit eventually as well.
