About the room

The apartment is a newly renovated basement suite with a laundry room and a large kitchen. The kitchen has lots of storage, and there are two seating areas, one with a large window. The apartment stays cool in the summer, keeps heat well in the winter and doesn’t have any moisture issues. There is also access to a large shaded backyard with the opportunity to garden if one is inclined. The bedroom we are renting out is large, 113 square ft with lots of light. It comes with a clean mattress and foldable bed frame as well as a stand-up cupboard/closet space. The closet came with the apartment, but we can get rid of the bed if it is not needed.

Total rent is $2040 (including water), split evenly between three people, making it $680 per person. WiFi and power are separate. Wifi is $19 per person, and power is more expensive in the winter since the apartment uses electric heat. In the late spring, summer and early fall, power is roughly $50 per person, per month. In the winter, it is around $133 per month. We are trying to set up equalizer payments so the power bill is roughly the same month to month, so it doesn’t suddenly jump in the winter. We are looking for someone who can be conscientious about the heat. We keep it around 21 degrees when home and lower at night and when no one is home.

Important: We have one resident female cat, age 8 months. She is playful and energetic and loves to be involved in everyone’s business. She is pretty quiet, but still has kitten energy. Along with our resident cat, I sometimes foster cats/kittens. I use the laundry room for a quarantine space for the fosters; however, once quarantine is over, I typically try to introduce them to my cat and let the fosters into the rest of the apartment. So far, I have mostly done kittens, max 4, but in the future, it could be pregnant or nursing cats, kittens, or shy adults. The laundry room can still be used while it is a foster space, but a potential roommate must love kitties and be ok if there is occasional noise from the laundry room, and sometimes having extra kitties underfoot. I clean litter and room daily when I foster and for my own cat as well.

The area is a quiet residential neighborhood near Lake Banock and Portland St. there is a Superstore at the bottom of the hill, several nice walks nearby and it is only a 10 minute walk to the Portland street bus routes including the 5 and the express buses to downtown Halifax, it is a 30 minute walk or 7 minute drive to NSCC Ivany campus or you can bus there easily. There is plenty of street parking. However, there is no designated parking space for a roommate. During winter parking bans, street parking is not permitted, so you would need to arrange alternative parking if you have a vehicle

If you are interested, please reach out with a message that has a bit about yourself, employment, previous and current living situation, hobbies, and anything else you want us to know about you. We will require 2 references, preferably from previous roommates or landlords.

About the roomies

A bit about us. We are a couple in our early 20s. I am a student at NSCC studying American Sign Interpretation, and my partner works. In the summer, I also nanny. We are quiet homebodies who like to play board games, read and cook. We don’t party and like to keep things tidy.
