Hi, Brian here, white male, almost 58, with 10 years of some of the most difficult graduate and post-graduate courses known to humanity and 3 degrees, one advanced, looking to get back into teaching. In spite of this (maybe because of it?) my life has been hell since Covid, made homeless more than once, living and working in my now gone car, one horrible rental situation after another, exploited over and over, forced out of Victoria for another AirBNB. Etc.; also been playing guitar for almost 19 years, play daily, getting good so musicians are welcome (maybe not a drum kit though, lol).

I have just signed a new lease on a 2 bedroom apartment 5 km out of downtown on the inner passage.

I could afford to live here alone in the short run, but in the long run not only would I prefer to cohabit, I need to.

But, I am in no hurry. Ideally I can find a suitable, community minded ADULT person, not a whiff of any drugs beyond (outdoor) pot and (indoor) booze, but no parties, no pets, no tobacco smokers, not really keen on too many guests either. I do not eat any junk food and prefer to cook. I do not have a car, but could sure use one for Costco runs (got the card and the gas money though). I walk or bike mostly. My work schedule varies, some early mornings, mostly days and nights, no fixed weekend.

So, strangers don’t really want to live together, hard to find a way to share the common spaces, but it’s the new reality with the housing crisis. So, one idea I have is to rent out both rooms to one person, maybe you need a home office for remote work, and then get some dividers and I will live in the living room. Not that we can’t and shouldn’t share costs or live more traditionally. We will share all the costs for services, rent and internet at least, but I am flexible, have minimal furniture and will not set up my things finally until I find a roommate. Rent and services will be somewhere between $800 to $900 in total a month, depending. You’ll need to get apartment insurance too, about $40 a month, and go through the management vetting process.

Mostly: your word has to matter, I will not suffer flakes or fools, and although everyone thinks they can communicate well, that is not my experience lately. I don’t expect people to be infallible, but I expect them to be accountable when they fail to meet the standards of shared living we agree to. I would prefer to draft a roommate agreement around this. If this doesn’t put you off, I have no preference to age, gender, race, whatever, but I want peace, ideally long term (rent goes up for short term) and I don’t want drama or other unhealthy sociopath behavior in my life anymore, now that I can finally get on with it again better housed. My plan is to die here, not in the actual apartment if I can avoid that, of course, lol!
