Urban Homestead Intentional Living House in Rossland

I have 2 bedrooms for rent in a unique living situation in Rossland for some special people interested in this lifestyle! What is an urban homestead? Although the house is in downtown Rossland and close to all amenities, we live as self-sufficiently and ecologically as possible. This means a focus on waste-reduction and energy conservation. Wood heat, cooking from scratch, buying package-free, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and electricity whenever possible, doing things by hand. If you think you can handle some extra chores and doing without some modern conveniences and luxuries, in exchange for lowering your ecological footprint, being healthier and more connected with things taken for granted, this might be a place for you! Specifics: the house is heated with wood. This means NOT CLIMATE CONTROLLED- the house will be chilly first thing in the morning, and the first one up is responsible for getting the fire going. It also means that everyone living here always has the woodstove on their mind- getting into the habit of checking it before you leave for work, as soon as you get home, before bed etc. Bringing in firewood from the woodpile periodically, taking the initiative to learn how to use the stove properly and efficiently. You can expect to wear normal Canadian winter indoor clothes –sweaters, pants, warm socks/slippers- we don’t keep it tropical. The central areas of the house are easy to get toasty, but the bedrooms don’t get as warm so good PJs are necessary for comfort! Duvets provided. The other main chore is snow shovelling. There is no snow blower here, but the good news is that shovelling the deck, driveway and stairs is great exercise. We keep things clean here. This isn’t a college dorm or skibum party house. This is a house for adults who enjoy skiing, but also enjoy living in a clean, tidy house and understand the periodic chores necessary to keep it that way (sweeping, keeping the kitchen clean etc.). No smoking. The bedrooms are small-medium in size and fully furnished. The bathroom is shared by roommates and I have my own. Very small but functional kitchen, no dishwasher. Washing machine on premises and we hang dry our laundry. No TV. We have an awesome grocery store just down the street, and the shuttle bus to the ski hill is ½ block away. The bus stop to Trail is a few minutes walk. There are two parking spots- 1 covered and one uncovered.

Looking for two singles or a couple, preferably aged 25+ and employed. Available this fall/winter (move in date negotiable) for a commitment until springtime, with the possibility of extension. Note for couples: the bedroom is small for a couple, but we would then have a spare bedroom you could use for storage, extra closet space, and for guests! Electricity is extra, but all other utilities are included, and there is no gas bill. Electricity ranges from $20-$35 pp /mo depending on how well we conserve it. Looking for healthy, like-minded people who are interested in being part of a little community for the winter, not people who just need a place to sleep off hangovers and boil their ramen packets. No stoner couchpotatoes! I want to live with people who either share my values, or are interested and committed to learning about this lifestyle. I also really need help with the winter chores!
